Persever8 Technology Training Internship  (Summer 2016)

Persever8 is a 501(c)3 nonprofit start-up that is dedicated to providing technical training (coding, specifically) and life skills and workplace readiness education to young adults with High-Functioning Autism.  Our program will empower people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) to reach their full potential.  Persever8 is an affiliate of the CIDD (Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities) at UNC Chapel Hill.

We are currently recruiting students for the second phase of our pilot program.  This program will begin in February 2016.  The pilot program will include some life skills lessons and the coding language we will be focusing on will be Python.  We are seeking computer science interns to help with the second phase of our pilot program, and serve as proctors for the on-line learning program. Linda Varblow, one of our co-founders, who is an Autism Specialist at TEACCH (the state autism program at UNC), will provide a short training for interns about autism and working with individuals on the autism spectrum.

What We’re Looking For:

Candidate who is self-motivated and results-oriented who has strong oral communication skills.

Candidate who is interested in working with learners who are just beginning to learn software coding skills.

Candidate who is familiar with on-line learning and able to give advice to those who may be new to this learning format.

Well-organized person with ability to prioritize assignments and assist students for which this may be a challenge.

Interested in the issue of equal access to learning and job training resources, and generally a socially conscious individual.

Responsibilities Include:

Attendance and participation in the pilot program meetings on Saturday mornings. (More than one intern can share this responsibility so that no one person would have to be available every Saturday).

Assisting trainees with coding syntax and structure.

Trouble-shooting with trainees when they get stuck or have questions.

Assisting small groups of trainees who will work on a group project.

Opportunities You Will Have:

Opportunity to help establish a local brand that works with a population receiving a lot of media attention.

Opportunity to learn about autism and make a difference in the lives of a marginalized population.

Work in a low-key environment, while honing your leadership skills.
